Motor failure

After about 1.5 years the motor stopped rotating or started slowly and then stopped. The chambers are clean and the flywheel is turning freely. The warranty only covers parts and the GE Appliance webpage did not provide estimates for my zip code.

Powerful grinder

Like so many others said in their reviews, I bought this unit because it was the top rated continuous feed disposer on Consumer Reports. It's bigger than my old unit so I had to make some adjustments to the piping under the sink, but installation wasn't too difficult. The hardest part was removing the old sink flange, which was secured with putty. I hoped it would be quieter considering the price range, but it's no louder than my old 1/2 hp disposer. It's very powerful - we call it "The Beast"! I tried to reach inside to see if any of the thick lime peels were left behind, but it's designed to be too small to fit your hand inside. Luckily it's strong enough that it ground up everything I put in it.

i REPACED A SMALLER GE UNIT WITH THE 1hp, WHIHC COMPICATED THE INSTALLATION A LITTLE BUT THINGS STILL LINED UP AFTER SOME CUTTING. AFTER A WEEK OF USE, ALL IS WELL.

WOW! It's so quiet!

The 1st thing I noticed was how quiet it was compared to my previous unit. I didn't realize that I had bought a 1 HP vs a 1/3 HP unit until we were installing it. Now I'm glad I went with the bigger one. The install was fairly easy but did require a 2nd person to help hold things in place. The reason I chose this one was because of it's impeccable rating on consumer reports. It was this one or one that was $400. This was an excellent choice.

Overall a good disposal

I purchased this to replace a 1/2 hp GE unit that had just failed. It's definitely more powerful and efficient, although I don't believe it to be any quieter which it is supposed to be. It certainly doesn't vibrate my counter like the other did. Would certainly recommend it over the smaller unit for those that are frequent users of a disposal.

Defective and difficult to install

The unit might be a snap for a plumber to install, but don't try it as a DYI project. It is very difficult for two people, probably impossible for one. Once installed, it leaked internally with water coming out of the electrical connection compartment. We'll be returning it to the store for a refund.

My wife says it sounds like a Growly Bear

Read the instructions and do at least one dry run before crawling under the sink! Went together fine. Had to use plumbers putty and I am concerned that all three plumber putty brands said to not use the putty on plastic, which is exactly where it was needed (sink flange). Splash guard has a smaller opening than our previous disposall and caught my wife stuffing stuf into the disposall with her fingers.

Super quiet and powerful!

This is a significant upgrade from our builder supplied 1/3 HP Insinkerator, if you do the research what we had was for infrequently used 2 person vacation home. We are loving our GE 1 HP disposal at a $100 less than the equivalent Insinkerator unit - great!!!
